Prenatal Massage #1 Myth

Updated: Aug 1

Prenatal Massage during the first trimester

One of the most common misconceptions surrounding prenatal massages is the unfounded belief that they can lead to a miscarriage. This myth often stems from a lack of understanding about the safety and benefits of prenatal massage therapy. In reality, when performed by a trained and experienced prenatal massage therapist, prenatal massages are not only safe but can also offer numerous advantages for both the mother and the developing baby.

Prenatal massages are specifically designed to cater to the unique needs and concerns of pregnant women. They can help alleviate common discomforts such as back pain, swelling, and fatigue, promoting relaxation and overall well-being. Additionally, prenatal massages can improve circulation, reduce stress and anxiety, and even contribute to better sleep quality for expectant mothers.

It is crucial for pregnant women to seek out certified prenatal massage therapists who are knowledgeable about the specific techniques and precautions required during pregnancy. By addressing any concerns or medical conditions with the therapist beforehand, pregnant women can ensure a safe and beneficial experience during their prenatal massage sessions.

Prenatal massage and miscarriage

Truly, dislodging the placenta through massage would require applying intense and forceful pressure on the abdomen, a method that no professional would ever use on pregnant women.

*Etiologies of miscarriage include the following:

  • Abnormalities of the embryo or chromosomal defects

  • Retroversion of the uterus, fibroid, or bicornuate uterus

  • Sexually transmitted diseases such as Chlamydia, rubelle, etc

  • Diabetes, thyroid conditions, nutritional deficiencies

  • Ectopic pregnancy

  • Hormonal imbalances

  • Immunological rejection of the fetus

  • Maternal age

  • Environmental factors such as smoke, drugs, etc

  • Untreated serious infections

  • Poorly controlled long-term diseases

  • Thyroid disease, lupus, autoimmune disorders

  • Problems with your uterus or cervix, such as fibroids, an abnormally shaped uterus, or a cervix that opens and widens too early, called cervical insufficiency

  • Blood clotting issues that block blood vessels carrying blood flow to the placenta

It is evident that massage and bodywork are not contributing factors to miscarriage.

Having a massage while pregnant can assist in providing relaxation for the mother, relieving discomfort, reducing swelling, and fostering a nurturing environment for the baby in the womb.

What makes this myth so popular?

The main reason why the myth that prenatal massage can cause miscarriage persists is due to the lack of proper studies on prenatal massage, pregnancy, and miscarriage until recently.

Another factor that contributes to this issue is the high risk of miscarriage during the first trimester of pregnancy. Due to lack of proper training, many massage therapists are unsure of how to safely massage a pregnant woman, leading them to avoid it altogether.

At Rebirth, we do ask clients in their first trimester to sign a waiver, it's not because it not safe, it's because miscarriage risk during this time is high.

As someone who has gone through a miscarriage before, I understand the mix of emotions that accompany it. I blamed myself, analyzed my behavior, and questioned every action I took in the days preceding the miscarriage. I wondered if it was the coffee I consumed, if I had exercised too intensely, or if because I had sex days prior. Every detail was closely examined. This is one reason why professionals often insist on a liability waiver. They aim to avoid being held accountable for occurrences that can occur without a clear cause.
