Mayan Abdominal Massage vs Mercier Therapy

Updated: Sep 29

Unlock the power of massage for womb wellness and fertility.

Mayan abdominal massage has recently gained popularity although it is an ancient healing practice dating back thousands of years.

Mercier therapy is a contemporary method that follows a particular protocol and is supported by evidence. A study conducted in 2012 revealed that the specialized protocol, which includes deep pelvic work, achieved an 83% success rate in aiding pregnancy for women facing fertility challenges.

Both modalities enhance fertility and womb wellness, but what's the difference between these two?

Abdominal massage is our passion and expertise at Rebirth. We continuously update our credentials with the latest studies and advancements in the field of womb or abdominal massage.

Let's explore the differences between Mercier Therapy and Mayan Womb Massage

Mayan Womb Massage

Various lineages of Mayan healers practice abdominal massage, each with unique techniques and interpretations of this traditional healing art. Additionally, different Mexican Indigenous lineages have their own approaches to abdominal womb massage. I have received womb massage from traditional healers across Mexico, Belize, and Costa Rica, as well as certified massage therapists trained in the Arvigo techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy, and the differences between all of them are noticeable. Skill sets range and everyone has their own style or bodywork recipe. It's what makes one person's touch and healing session unique.

Our abdominal massage is a comprehensive therapy that encompasses massaging the entire abdomen and other body regions, rather than concentrating solely on the pelvic area. It employs a softer touch compared to Mercier therapy, yet it remains deep, profoundly effective, incorporating a holistic perspective that acknowledges the mind-body relationship. Our emphasis lies in enhancing circulation, nurturing the womb connection, and targeting pressure points across different body areas. Personally, I am deeply passionate about this therapeutic technique, feeling a profound connection to this practice!

Indigenous abdominal massage predates modern abdominal massage. It is the birth of abdominal massage! While there is a lack of current standardized research on this therapeutic healing practice, its effectiveness is evident in the individuals it has benefited for centuries.

Mercier Therapy

Mercier Therapy was created by Dr. Jennifer Mercier, a Midwife, Naturopathic Doctor, and Certified Massage therapist. It specifically aids in fertility, including natural conception as well as assisted conception through IVF and IUI. This treatment is completely focused on the pelvic region,- and includes deeper manipulation of pelvic organs and facia to improve mobility and blood circulation through more targeted techniques. It is visceral manual manipulation from a Western perspective. The entire hour is focused on the pelvic region. It is a more intensive therapy, that most consider uncomfortable or painful.

The biggest difference is the strict protocol certified practitioners must adhere to.

This therapy is best for those who can commit to the protocol which consists of 6 one-hour treatments within a 6 week time frame. Mercier Therapy is also evidence-based. To see the study, please click here.

We are so honored to offer both techniques at Rebirth.

Which therapy is right for me?

Mayan abdominal massage targets the entire abdomen, with a special focus on the digestive system and womb. Opting for this therapy is beneficial for enhancing fertility and promoting better digestion.

Mercier Therapy concentrates specifically on the pelvic region, uterus, ovaries, and sacrum. If your primary aim is to improve fertility, have been trying to conceive for more than one year, and you can commit to the protocol of 6 one-hour sessions over a 6-week period, we recommend this treatment.
