Yoni Steam Baths Red Flags

ree

Herbal vaginal steam baths have surged in popularity recently, capturing the attention of wellness enthusiasts and celebrities alike! The resurgence of this ancient practice can be attributed to influential figures such as Gwyneth Paltrow, who has long advocated for holistic health and natural remedies, as well as Tamara and Tamisha, and the Aunties from the hit series, Reservation Dogs. Their portrayal of cultural practices has undoubtedly sparked interest and curiosity among viewers. Additionally, a plethora of other shows and prominent celebrities have played a significant role in bringing this traditional healing method back into the spotlight, making it trendy and accessible to a modern audience.

I am truly excited to witness women embracing these time-honored healing practices that connect them with their roots and heritage. In a world where the fast pace of life often sidelines self-care and holistic approaches to health, it is refreshing to see a revival of interest in such nurturing rituals. Yoni steams, also known as vaginal steams, or pelvic steams, are often described as a magical elixir, offering a multitude of benefits that can significantly enhance women's health and well-being.

These steams involve the use of warm herbal infusions, which are thought to provide a range of therapeutic effects. Many women turn to yoni steaming as a natural remedy for boosting fertility, as the warmth and steam can help increase blood flow to the pelvic area, enhancing reproductive health. Furthermore, this practice is celebrated for its ability to support healing during the postpartum period, as it can assist in the recovery of the body after childbirth, cleansing after birth discharge, speeding recovery of the uterus, while promoting relaxation and comfort. In addition to these benefits, yoni steams are also known for their effectiveness in easing those pesky period pains that many women experience each month. The soothing properties of the herbs used in the steam can help alleviate cramps and discomfort, providing a gentle, natural alternative to over-the-counter pain relief. Moreover, yoni steaming is believed to tackle various uterine issues, including irregular menstrual cycles and other reproductive health concerns.

Overall, the revival of herbal vaginal steam baths is not just a fleeting trend; it represents a broader movement towards holistic health and the empowerment of women to take charge of their bodies and well-being. As more women explore these ancient practices, we can hope for a greater understanding and appreciation of the wisdom that has been passed down through generations. This reconnection with traditional healing methods is a vital step towards nurturing our bodies and honoring the feminine experience.

It's time to reclaim our traditional healing mojo, sprinkle in some science and physiology, and mix it all together for the ultimate wellness cocktail that nourishes both the body and the spirit. The fusion of ancient practices with modern understanding can lead to a holistic approach to wellness that resonates deeply within us. By embracing the wisdom of our ancestors while incorporating the latest research in health and physiology, we can create a truly transformative experience that enhances our well-being on multiple levels.

At our wellness clinic, we are proud to offer these steamy sessions that not only provide physical benefits but also foster a sense of community and empowerment among women. We even teach women how to DIY at home, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to continue their healing journeys independently. Seriously, nothing makes my day more than hearing a client rave about having "the best period of their life" after a steam session! The joy and relief that come from these experiences are truly heartwarming and affirm the importance of what we do.

However, as with any trend, there's a wave of misinformation and self-proclaimed experts with about as much experience as my cat. This can lead to confusion and potentially harmful practices. So, here’s what to absolutely avoid when steaming, to ensure that you are engaging in this ancient practice safely and effectively:

Essential oils in steams

Putting essential oils in Yoni steams is like inviting a bull into a china shop—just don't do it! These oils are super concentrated and way too intense for such a delicate area. The risk of irritation or adverse reactions is far too high. The same goes for ingesting them. Yikes! It’s crucial to prioritize safety and choose gentle, natural options that won't compromise your health.

Steaming in the toilet

Once, a doula came to Rebirth and tried our steam bath. She then tried to replicate it without any knowledge or training. She started steaming in her toilet and recommended it to her postpartum clients. She even slapped my name on the directions on her website without my knowledge or permission. I was livid. This is a one-way ticket to Infection City. It's unsanitary, especially postpartum. Seriously, even if you scrub it with bleach, why risk steaming where you, uh, do your business? The bathroom is not a sacred space for healing; it is essential to create a clean, dedicated environment for the practice to maximize its benefits and minimize health risks.

Steaming with Psychedelic mushrooms

I personally don't see any benefit of steaming with a fungus. Stick to herbs, folks! The power of traditional herbs has been celebrated for centuries for their healing properties. Utilizing these time-tested botanicals is far more effective and safe than experimenting with substances that can lead to unpredictable experiences.

Yoni Steaming with too many herbs

Yoni steaming with 10 different herbs is just not necessary and could be counterproductive. The vaginal ecosystem is delicate and complex, and introducing a multitude of herbs simultaneously may disrupt its natural balance.

Each herb possesses unique properties and effects, and while some may be beneficial for yoni steaming, combining too many at once can lead to unforeseen reactions. For instance, certain herbs may have astringent properties, while others may be more soothing. When mixed together, these contrasting effects could potentially irritate the sensitive tissues of the vagina rather than provide the desired calming or healing benefits.

Yoni Steaming in porous pots-

Porous materials can harbor bacteria and other pathogens, which can lead to infections or complications. Materials such as clay should be sanitized after each use. Make sure to soak with vinegar for about 10 minutes, then thoroughly rinse with water. Next, bring water to a boil, then simmer for for 30 minutes. Boom. Sanitized Clay pot.

Yoni Steaming in chairs made from fabric material

How clean is clean? If you can't answer that, proceed with caution. Fabric can trap bacteria and moisture, making it a less-than-ideal choice for a steaming session. Instead, use materials that can be thoroughly sanitized to maintain a hygienic environment for your practice.

Yoni Steaming by just squatting over a piping hot pot

WHY!?!? I've been in workshops where they suggest wrapping a towel around a hot pot and squatting over it. Well, I've seen it done standing over the pot, wrapped in a blanket, not sitting on a boiling pot. Standing beats squatting to avoid burns. The risk of injury is simply too high when proper safety measures aren’t taken. Always prioritize your comfort and safety during these sessions. I also have a hack for v-steaming at home without spending any money. I will be posting soon!

Do not steam during pregnancy

There are exceptions, like steaming past 38 weeks with low heat to prepare for labor. However, this should only be done under the guidance of a certified professional. Check out my blog on Pelvic steaming for labor prep.

Steaming during an active infection

I get it, you're seeking natural alternatives to clear up that yeast or BV infection. The pills from the doctor are not helping. Trust me, we can clear up the infection naturally via herbs, diet and supplements without steaming. Clear the infection first, then steam to prevent future ones. The goal is to support your body’s natural healing processes, not hinder them.

When an infection is present, heat and circulation can cause it to spread. Always listen to your body and consult with a healthcare professional if you're unsure. Yes, I have seen and heard that from a traditional perspective, v-steaming with salt clears up infection, eh....maybe if it's minor, but I do not recommend it. It has the potential to make it worse.

Don't v-steam longer than recommended

15-30 minutes is plenty. Too much heat can dry you out and irritate. Overdoing it can lead to discomfort and negate the benefits of the practice. It's essential to find the right balance to enjoy the maximum therapeutic effects without risking harm.

Yoni Steaming with non-organic herbs

I have been to some spas where they tell me their herbs are not organic (crying emoji). Our vaginal tissue absorbs all the pesticides on those herbs, doing more harm than good. Please make sure your herbs are organic and the water is ultra-purified!

Now, some of you Steam Queens might not agree with me, and that's cool. I always err on the side of caution. My motto is: do no harm, when in doubt, don't. It’s vital to approach Yoni steaming with respect, knowledge, facts, and a commitment to safety in order to ensure that this beautiful practice continues to empower and heal women for generations to come.
